BRAND WORK
BACKGROUND:
Whistle Express is a growing drive-through car wash brand with locations across the country. As the company expanded, it needed a brand that could grow with it, one that felt distinctive, memorable, and bigger than the functional benefits of a car wash.
Like much of the category, Whistle had plenty of practical reasons to choose them. Fast washes. Free vacuums, towels, cleaners, and floor mat stations. Convenient locations. Membership options that make it easy to keep your car clean.
But features alone were not enough to build a brand people could connect with.
Whistle needed to define what it stood for, separate itself from a crowded category, and create a compelling reason for people to care.
CHALLENGE:
Car washes tend to sell the same thing: a clean car.
The category is filled with messages about advanced equipment, premium chemicals, unlimited memberships, speed, shine, and price. While all of those things matter, they also make it difficult for one brand to feel meaningfully different from another.
So we started with a bigger question.
Why do people really care about having a clean car?
We explored the role cars play in people's lives and found an opportunity that had very little to do with the wash itself.
Cars get messy because life gets messy.
Road trips. Kids in the backseat. Dogs covered in mud. Camping trips. Soccer practice. Beach days. Dirt roads. Fast food. Weekend adventures. The mess is often evidence that something fun happened.
Instead of treating that mess like a problem, we saw an opportunity to celebrate it.
THE APPROACH
We shifted the conversation away from the clean and toward everything that happens before it.
Whistle Express would not be a brand telling people to keep their cars spotless. It would be the brand giving people permission to use them.
Take the road trip. Bring the dogs. Let the kids destroy the backseat. Hit the dirt road. Go camping. Get muddy. Make a mess.
Because when the fun is over, Whistle makes cleaning it up easy.
That simple shift opened up an entirely new world for the brand. Instead of being confined to the car wash tunnel, Whistle could show up anywhere life gets a little messy.
THE IDEA
Life’s More Fun When It’s Easy to Clean Up.
The platform turned Whistle from a brand about washing cars into a brand about everything you can do when you are not worried about keeping them clean.
We built a visual and verbal identity around embracing the mess, with an energetic, playful voice that encouraged people to get out and live a little.
The work celebrated muddy adventures, chaotic backseats, furry passengers, weekend road trips, pollen-covered cars, sandy beach days, and all the other evidence of a life well lived.
Whistle became the easy reset waiting at the end of it all.
